“Without a Curse” Episode 519: “Carl Crawford Controversy Highlights Organizational Dysfunction” (7/30/12)

The Red Sox battled for relevancy over the weekend, and wound up hanging onto their relevancy with an exciting 3-2 extra-inning win over the Yankees on Sunday night.  After taking two of three games from New York, with Clay Buchholz taking the mound at Fenway tonight, the Red Sox seem as if they could be poised to finally make a run.  But, you’ve heard that one before, right?

The trade deadline is on Tuesday, and after a semi-respectable road trip, the Red Sox will definitely not be sellers.  Could they, though, look to “dump” Josh Beckett, and dramatically alter the perpetually underachieving core of the team?  Some reports say the Red Sox are, which has to be looked at as fantastic news.

Even though the team played well on the field over the weekend, more controversy erupted off the field.  The latest news involves Carl Crawford, who is unaware, and unhappy with the plan for his playing schedule.  Bobby Valentine doesn’t like it either, so much so, that he previously blatantly ignored the orders on Crawford.  Oh, and Crawford still insists he needs Tommy John surgery.  What a mess.

In the “Around the League” segment, Alex looks at the AL East standings, and the latest trades.  Who will be moved between now and Tuesday’s deadline?  The Angels bought big with Zack Greinke, meaning the Rangers may have to counter.  Also, how should one rate Kenny Williams’ recent moves?
